The Women’s Fund of Central Ohio’s most recent research report, Making Women Wealthy and Free, outlines what over 3,000 women shared about their experiences with building wealth in Central Ohio. The report is a roadmap for what our community can do to address the barriers that prevent women from building wealth and having the freedom to make their own decisions about their lives.

When women have wealth, the entire community benefits. The Women’s Fund’s goal is to create a coalition of public, private, and nonprofit partners committed to investing in equitable, sustainable solutions to the issues women face. This report will guide the Women’s Fund’s grantmaking and advocacy in the coming years and will serve as a foundation for local decision making.

In early 2024, Dana Borrelli-Murray, CEO of the Girl Scouts of Southeastern New England (GSSNE) and Kelly Nevins, CEO of Women’s Fund of Rhode Island (WFRI), decided to initiate this project to investigate one question: How are the girls in Rhode Island faring? The answer to that question is complicated and the data reveals that our girls need us. Here are a few disturbing points:

  • 43% of middle-school girls reported being bullied on school property;
  • Nearly 1 in 3 middle-school girls seriously considered suicide, with 13% attempting suicide; and
  • Nearly 18% of high-school girls reported experiencing dating violence.

The Rhode Island Girls Report was a project built by many talented, generous, smart folks. The data was compiled and the report created through a collaborative effort of Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island, Brown University School of Public Health, Girls on the Run RI, Girl Scouts of Southeastern New England, Rhode Island for Community & Justice, Rhode Island KIDS COUNT, The Womxn Project Education Fund, and WFRI.

A groundbreaking new report from The Women’s Fund Miami-Dade, The Invisible Victims: A Gendered Focus on Gun Violence in Miami-Dade County, uncovers the alarming and underreported impact of gun violence on women and underserved communities in South Florida. Unlike national reports that provide broad trends, this report reveals how gun violence plays out in Miami-Dade County specifically, highlighting critical gaps in data, disparities in victimization, and shortcomings in public policy. The report was made possible in part through a Supporting Safer Communities Program grant from The Carrie Meek Foundation, funded by Miami-Dade County’s Community Violence Intervention Initiative.

Women’s Fund of Central Indiana released their first-ever State of Women in Central Indiana Report, which paints a picture of what it’s like to be a woman in Central Indiana with regional and statewide data on women’s health, well-being, and safety.

According to the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, Indiana has a “D” grade in terms of women’s well-being. This report—which examines health, workforce participation, housing, transportation, and violence—supports this assessment. The statistics in the report paint a troubling picture. Many women in the community are struggling, and intersecting factors like race, geography, and identity compound that struggle. That goes for girls, too. The Women’s Fund’s report comes on the heels of the 2024 Indiana Girl Report, developed by Girl Coalition of Indiana.

Communities can’t solve problems or seize opportunities if they don’t know what they are, which is why the data in this report is so crucial. With this report, decision-makers can take informed action. And it tells women: you are heard, and there is hope.
